This post is for anyone who's ever wondered how to migrate their Time Machine backups in full from one hard drive to another. I just did it, and it was simple as anything. It's probably a good idea to migrate to a new drive every couple of years in order to pre-empt the inevitable failure of each backup drive.
- Do a final backup to your old drive, then turn off Time Machine.
- Use Disk Utility to erase the new drive, choosing Mac OS Extended Journaled for the format.
- In Finder, select the new drive and Get Info. Scroll to "Sharing and Permissions" and
- Set permissions to Read and Write for Everyone
- Untick "Ignore Ownership For This Volume"
- In Finder, go to your old drive and copy the folder Backups.backupdb.
- Paste into the top level of your new drive.
- When the copy is over, go into Time Machine Preferences $\rightarrow$ Select Disk and select the new drive.
- Turn Time Machine back on. The first backup will be incremental and will follow on from your other backups as if nothing had changed.
Yep, it really is that easy.
